Including Others in Self

Created by local artist Laura Shill during the pandemic, this installation explores truly listening to one another from a distance. Large satellite discs were used during World War I to hear enemies approaching, but when faced toward each other, you can hear the voice of someone 30′ from you, wrapping around you like a blanket.

This installation was on exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver in 2020. Adams County, in partnership with RedLine Contemporary Art Center, brought the piece to the Pelican Ponds Open Space from 2021 – 2025. It’s now in its permanent home at the Path to Wellness in Riverdale Regional Park.

Including Others in Self is part of the Adams County Public Art Collection.

About Laura Shill

Laura Shill is an artist based in Los Angeles, CA and Denver, CO whose work is a collision of sculpture, installation, performance, and photography. Shill addresses ideas of viewer and subject, disclosure and concealment, absence and intimacy. Her works explore the transformative potential of people and objects through early and experimental forms of image making that pair the sinister and beautiful. Her sculptural and installation work borrows theatrical conventions and employs repetition of form to create environments that immerse and oscillate between humor and heartbreak.
