Family Support and Opportunities for Involvement

Family support services are a key component of the Head Start program and available to all Head Start families to access.

Some of the available services include:

  • Providing case management to families
  • Offering crisis intervention
  • Assisting with access to community resources
  • Teaching advocacy skills
  • Developing family goals for a successful future

Families are also provided numerous opportunities to get involved with the program. They include volunteering, employment opportunities, serving on committees, and being involved with the Policy Council.

Support Options

Adams County Head Start provides the following services to Head Start parents/caregivers including:

  • Assisting parents/caregivers in identifying and meeting personal / family goals through individual home and center meetings.
  • Assisting families in accessing community resources such as: food banks, parenting classes, English as a second language classes, GED classes, health services, legal services, and more.
  • Facilitating workshops focusing on physical health, mental health, nutrition, education, and special needs.
  • Supporting parents/caregivers in enhancing leadership and advocacy skills through parent involvement.
  • Providing crisis intervention through referrals to services available in the community.

Head Start Policy Council

The Policy Council is a group of Head Start parents and community members who help lead and make decisions about the Adams County Head Start program.

You have a voice. Policy Council members help shape policies and make program decisions that impact them and their children.

Meetings

Policy Council meetings are held monthly, in person at different Head Start locations in Adams County. Al Policy Council Meetings are held the third Wednesday of every month from 6 to 8 p.m.

Any Head Start parent/caregiver is welcome and encouraged to join. Please RSVP with your Family Support Case Manager.

When you attend a monthly meeting, you’ll have access to:

  • Childcare during the meeting at no cost
  • Food and refreshments before the meeting
  • Resources and information

Membership

Policy Council members are elected by the parents/caregivers of children enrolled in the program. Parents often join the Policy Council after serving on a parent committee, but serving on a parent committee is not required to get involved.

Members can serve for one year at a time, for up to five years.

Roles include:

  • Policy Council member
  • Policy Council alternate
  • Parent Representative

Parent Committees (Center Parent Cafes):

Parent Committees are center-based meetings for families to connect, learn about center-specific information and activities, provide input, and advocate for the needs and interests of children and families at their center. Parent Cafés also provide an opportunity to build relationships with other families and program staff.

Families interested in participating should connect with their Family Support Case Manager (FSCM) for upcoming Parent Café dates and additional information.
